When looking through my photos that I had saved on my computer, I found some pictures from our Fun Run in February and thought I would post them ....Better late than never, right?! Thanks again for all the pledges that were collected. Because of your hard work and generosity, our class raised over $700 for BES - WOW!!!! We loved being able to celebrate our Moms and Grandmas last week at our annual Mom's Day Fashion Show!! Our moms and grandmas do so much for us and we appreciate them more than they will ever know. Being able to put on the fashion show and surprise them with a few treats was a small way to say, "thank you!" We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!! Believe me, it was everything we hoped for....and MORE! If you have never been....GO! Look for a coupon to come home in your child's agenda - it is such a wonderful place for children (and adults) :)

We had a surprise visit from a sneaky little leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day.

While our friends were at lunch, this little leprechaun came into our classroom and made a HUGE mess! He left little green footprints all over the room, "gold" on the floor, and he even left us a note! After working hard to get everything cleaned up, we really hope that leprechaun does not come back for a visit any time soon!!

We celebrated "Read Across America Week" by dressing up as Dr. Seuss Characters...

A visit from the Cat in the Hat....

The Cat in the Hat brought each of our friends a book - Thanks, Cat!

To wrap up our week, we voted on our favorite Dr. Seuss book. Our class favorite was, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back"...there was just something about the cat eating cake in the tub that we just couldn't resist! :)

Writing Workshop....

Every day, we hone our writing skills during a 45 minute segment that we call "Writing Workshop." For many of our friends, this is their FAVORITE time of day. They are free to write about anything they choose....and I'm sure you can imagine the VAST array of topics that we see during this time! ;0)

We discuss where our Writing Inspiration can come from...our hearts, memories, concerns about the world, feelings, things we wonder about, and much, much more! We have also discussed fiction and nonfiction. I am so proud of all the wonderful writers in our class - we have a great group of authors (and illustrators!)

Dad's Day...

On Friday, January 22nd we culminated our week of learning all about the letter D by celebrating Dad's Day! We had a Delightful time with lots of Disco Dancing, Dads, Dudes, and Donuts! Thank you so much to all the Dads and "Dudes" that made it out to celebrate with us. And to all those that were unable to attend, please know that you were missed! =)

White Sight Word Party

Before our Winter Break, we celebrated the readers in our classroom by having a "White Word Party!!" I am so proud of all of our friends that have mastered reading these words....you are on your way to becoming fluent readers! ;0)

We started off with, what else.....SHAVING CREAM! We had a ball drawing and writing on our tables with shaving cream (we did have to remind some friends that this was SHAVING cream and not WHIPPED cream - ha!) Not only was it fun, but our classroom smelt very fresh and "manly" all afternoon.

After the shaving cream we had cotton ball relay races. We used straws to blow on cotton balls (boys vs girls, of course) and as you can see, we loved this!!! Be sure to check out the "Photo Gallery" link for more pictures of our white word party!

I'm looking forward to seeing ALL of our friends at our "Blue Word Party" in the spring!!

I hope everyone's year has gotten off to a great start! I know I have heard wonderful things from Mrs. King & Mrs. Price about our kindergarten class....it sounds like you are learning a lot and having fun!!

I wanted to let you know that September (can you believe it is just around the corner???) is Library Card Sign-Up Month. If you are able, make time to take your child to your local library and sign up for a library card. Encourage your child to check out books and let him/her know how WONDERFUL and EXCITING reading can be! Check out books that you can read together as a family and books that your child will enjoy reading (or looking at) on their own! You will never regret instilling a love of reading in your child and the quality time you will spend reading together.

I would like to welcome all of our new friends to Kindergarten. I am so excited that you will be in my class this year and I am looking forward to a great year. We are going to have a wonderful time and learn so much. As many of you know, I will be staying home with my precious baby girl until the beginning of October. Until that time, Mrs. King will be filling in for me. We are incredibly lucky to have her and I know that you will enjoy your time with her. I will be dropping in periodically and making sure to keep up with things that are going on in the classroom. We had an awesome time at our blue sight word party celebrating all of our "True Blue Readers!" We enjoyed fingerpainting on the tables with blue finger paint, eating blue peeps, drinking blue juice, and of course eating pizza! We practiced our blue sight words all week while playing sight word BINGO and many other games. I am so proud of all of our friends that have accomplished this goal! Keep up the great work.

Boosterthon Fun Run

We had a great time at the Boosterthon Fun Run! We raised money for our school and had an awesome time exercising with our friends! We were expecting the weather to be very cold so we all had on our layers and coats and full winter gear, but as you can see...we gradually "shed" all of those layers! Thank you to everyone that came out to support our little runners!

Dental Health is Important!

We have been learning about dental health and the proper way to care for our teeth! We have made models of our mouths portraying all of our "baby" teeth and we are all looking forward to the eventual appearance of our permanent teeth.
We also discussed the fact that not EVERYONE loses teeth at the same time. Some of our friends have already lost multiple teeth and others are still waiting for that magic moment to happen...each person is unique!

We practiced flossing on "teeth" (egg cartons) and learned a song to sing while we flossed. Ask your child to share it with you! We made hippo puppets and filled their mouths with "teeth" (marshmallows). We loved putting on puppet shows with our toothy hippos and sharing what we had learned about dental health. We also made big smiles and wrote about what makes us smile. We are now anxiously awaiting the visit from the dental hygienist in a few weeks so we can show off all the new information we have learned! Happy Brushing (and flossing!)

We celebrated Abraham Lincoln's birthday by conducting a penny experiment. We started out with some "dirty" pennies and then placed them in a cup of vinegar with a teaspoon of salt. We patiently waited 10 minutes...and...TA DA! Our pennies came out nice and clean! What a cool experiment! We then made Abraham Lincoln's log cabin out of pretzel sticks and put our new shiny penny in the window. We ended our day by reading a book by one of our favorite authors, Jan Brett. In The Hat a mischievous little hedgehog, "Hedgie" gets stuck in what he thinks is a hat. We enjoyed making our own Hedgie the Hedgehog Hats to complete our exciting day. If you have NOT returned your school pictures and/or picture money, returned overdue library books, or paid any other unpaid fines, please do so ASAP so that your child may continue to particpate in all end of the year activities!!

We have a few LifeTouch Class Pictures remaining. If you would like to purchase one, please send in $12 cash or check (made out to LifeTouch).

Remember to read and test on TWO library books per week. The school year is coming to an end, and we want all of our friends to reach their goal of 9 AR POINTS for the quarter!!

Meet Mrs. Tippins...

My name is Amy Tippins and I have taught kindergarten for five years. This is my third year at Buford Elementary School and there is no place I would rather be! I truly believe that BES is the BESt school around!! I am encouraged every day by the amazing amount of support we receive from the teachers, students, parents, and members of the community! Buford is definitely a part of my family...my brother teaches math at the High School and my sister-in-law is a 2nd grade teacher at the Academy!

I graduated from The University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) in 2004 with a degree in Early Childhood Education and an endorsement in Elementary Mathematics. After graduation, I was a long-term sub in a first grade classroom for six months until I was hired as a Kindergarten Teacher for the 2004-2005 school year. I taught Kindergarten at a school in Gwinnett County before moving to Buford and finding my home!

I am married to my high school sweetheart, Jeffrey and we have recently welcomed our sweet baby girl, Libbi! We live in Suwanee and enjoy being active in our community. Jeffrey works for an insurance firm in Atlanta and sweet Libbi comes to school with me where she attends the Buford City Schools Childcare. I enjoy shopping, learning to sew, teaching, going out to eat, being involved in my church, decorating my home, GA football, my TiVo, and spending time with my family and friends!

I am blessed to be able to do what I love each and every day. Teaching Kindergarten is a joy and I can assure you, there is never a dull moment!! I am thrilled to be your child's teacher this year and I can't wait to see what the school year has in store for us!
